The registered version of FixNews has the following extra features available:
-
Option to disable JavaScript in incoming email and/or news articles.
-
DesiScroll: A convenient method of scrolling in the browser.
-
Extra filtering options
-
Option to change the "From" and "Reply-to" addresses in newsgroup posts
("anti-spam").
These are described below:
Option to disable JavaScript in incoming email and/or news articles
The registered version of FixNews allows
turning off JavaScript for email and/or news article.
This can protect against embedded spam in email
or news articles. With this option selected, FixNews slightly alters the JavaScript tags
in the incoming email or news articles to render them harmless. You
can still view the JavaScript source by using the view-source command,
but because of the altered tag the browser will not act upon it.
Option to change the "From" and "Reply-to" addresses in newsgroup posts.
Spammers are known to collect email addresses from newsgroup posts.
A common solution for this is to change your email identity before posting.
Of course, you must then change it back before sending email and back again
before posting another newsgroup article. FixNews takes care of all
this automatically. You can specify an "anti-spam" email address
for yourself. It will automatically be used in
all posts you make to a newsgroup (except secure newsgroups, or other newsgroups
you specify.) But your personal email will continue to use your normal
identity.
Please Note: The anti-spam feature
of FixNews will not remove you from the spammers' lists that you
already are on. It will only keep you from getting placed on new
lists.
Additional Filtering Options
In the registered version, you can also specify filtering based upon
a minimum and/or a maximum number of lines in a message. Typical
news-servers also include information on cross-referenced newsgroups in
the message summary list -- you can also use this information for filtering
messages, and filter out any messages which contain more than N cross-referenced
newsgroups.
Please note that the "more than N cross-referenced newsgroups" feature
is news-server dependent. While it does work with a majority of today's
news-servers, it is possible that it won't work with your news-server.
DesiScroll: Convenient scrolling in the browser
The registered version of FixNews includes a bundled version of Desiderata
Software's DesiScroll
product. This feature works within the browser, and lets users scroll
vertically using the mouse right button, without having to hunt for the
vertical scroll bar. Since browsing typically involves lots of vertical
scrolling, this feature can be quite useful in the browser.
